Newsom Plans Legal Challenge
Governor Gavin Newsom reported Sunday that 300 California National Guard troops have been ordered to Oregon by President Trump. The governor criticized the deployment as an overreach of federal authority and said the state will seek legal action to halt the movement. He claimed the administration was turning to California’s forces to work around a court order blocking Oregon’s own Guard from being mobilized.
Judge Halts Oregon Guard Deployment
The decision follows a temporary restraining order issued by U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut, preventing 200 Oregon Guard soldiers from being deployed to Portland. The order, effective until at least October 18, raised constitutional questions over the use of military personnel for domestic policing purposes.
Troops Arrive as Federal Agencies Remain Silent
Oregon officials confirmed that over 100 California Guard members landed late Saturday, with additional troops expected in the coming days. The Pentagon has not publicly acknowledged the deployment, and state leaders said they received no formal notice from federal authorities. The situation has intensified tensions between state governments and the Trump administration over presidential authority to move Guard units across state lines.
