Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty on Friday to federal stalking charges tied to the death of top health insurance executive Brian Thompson. The unexpected courtroom decision brings a major turn to a high-profile case that sparked deep debates across the nation.

Mangione, 28, addressed the court during a federal hearing in Manhattan. He admitted to shooting Thompson outside a Midtown hotel in late 2024. Thompson served as the chief executive officer of UnitedHealthcare. He had traveled to New York to attend an annual investor meeting for the company.

In a formal statement, Mangione explained how he tracked Thompson prior to the attack. He confessed to using a 3D-printed gun with a silencer to commit the crime. He also admitted that he emailed the firm while pretending to be an investor. He used that fake identity to gather details about the event. Prosecutors noted that video evidence also showed Mangione following Thompson the day before the shooting took place.

The decision marks a clear shift in legal strategy for Mangione. He had previously entered a plea of not guilty to both state and federal counts. Under the federal stalking charges, he now faces a potential maximum penalty of life in prison. The judge scheduled his formal sentencing for December.

The morning attack on a prominent corporate leader drew massive media focus. It also ignited public discussions surrounding the medical coverage industry. Mangione spoke against what he described as greed within private health providers. His statements resonated with many people who feel frustrated by coverage denials. Some supporters have worn custom T-shirts to his court sessions, while his story has generated memes and online products.

However, federal law enforcement leaders strongly condemned the crime outside the courthouse on Friday. Jamie McDonald, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, delivered a firm statement to the press following the proceeding.

“Any person who celebrates, encourages or excuses actions like these is fundamentally wrong,” McDonald told reporters. He stated that violent acts must never be used to advance a political or social belief.

The family of Brian Thompson also shared a public statement after the hearing. They called the guilty plea a significant step toward accountability.

“While nothing will ease the pain of losing him, we are grateful that the federal justice system has held the person responsible for this heinous act accountable,” the family expressed. They asked the court to impose a sentence that reflects the full gravity of the crime.

Defense attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo spoke to reporters outside the building about her client’s past history. She said Mangione experienced severe back pain after an injury years ago. He faced tough challenges while trying to get proper medical care. She stated that he felt the system had ruined his life.

His legal team also criticized federal and state prosecutors for pursuing dual cases. Defense lawyers filed a motion on Friday asking the court to drop the state charges.

Mangione was scheduled to face a state murder trial starting September 8. However, New York state law limits dual prosecutions for similar acts once a federal conviction occurs. Legal observers note that the federal plea could create major legal hurdles for state prosecutors.

Anna Cominsky, a law professor at New York Law School, indicated that double jeopardy protections will likely play a key role. State prosecutors plan to fight the motion, but the new plea changes the courtroom dynamics.

The legal proceedings continue to draw close attention from observers nationwide. Nora Williams, 28, spoke outside the court on Friday regarding the overall impact of the case. She noted that Thompson did not deserve to die, but she feels the double charges raise valid legal questions. All eyes now turn to the upcoming December sentencing date.
