Patrick Clancy has spoken publicly about the grief he has carried since the deaths of his three children. In a recent interview, the 36-year-old father reflected on loss, healing and the challenges he has faced in the years since the tragedy that changed his life.
Clancy said there was a period when he struggled to find purpose. He recalled feeling overwhelmed by grief after losing his children, Cora, Dawson and Callan.
He said there was a time when he did not expect to live beyond his mid-thirties. Looking back, he described the emotional pain as difficult to understand unless someone has experienced a similar loss.
The tragedy followed a difficult period for his former wife, Lindsay Clancy, after the birth of their youngest child, Callan, in 2022.
Patrick said Lindsay began experiencing severe mental health problems in the months after giving birth. He recalled that she suffered from sleep loss, depression and intrusive thoughts. During that time, she visited emergency rooms several times and received treatment from medical professionals.
She also entered a treatment program for postpartum depression and later spent time at a psychiatric hospital. Patrick said he tried to help but often felt unsure about how to navigate the medical system and support someone facing a serious mental health crisis.
He said mental illness can be difficult to recognize and understand, even for people closest to the person experiencing it.
The family’s lives changed forever in January 2023. Patrick said he returned home from an errand and discovered a devastating scene. Two of his children, Cora and Dawson, had died. His youngest son, Callan, was rushed to a children’s hospital for emergency treatment.
Patrick said he held onto hope that Callan would survive. He remembered praying for the chance to raise at least one of his children and tell him stories about his brother and sister.
Callan remained alive for several days after the incident. Patrick said he spent precious time with his son in the hospital. He recalled holding him and staying by his side until his final moments.
In the days that followed, Patrick shared public tributes to each of his children. He also made the decision to forgive Lindsay.
He said many public descriptions of her focused only on anger and blame. While acknowledging that a terrible act had occurred, Patrick said he believes severe mental illness played a major role in what happened.
According to Patrick, forgiveness was something he chose for himself and his family. He said Lindsay never asked for forgiveness, but he decided to give it.
Both Patrick and Lindsay later filed medical malpractice lawsuits against healthcare providers involved in her treatment. The legal cases remain ongoing.
Patrick said he often reflects on the choices he made during that difficult period. He believes he did the best he could with the information available at the time. Even so, he said he continues to live with the outcome every day.
After the tragedy, Patrick moved from Massachusetts to New York City. He said the move helped him find privacy and begin rebuilding his life.
This year, attention returned to the case during Lindsay Clancy’s criminal trial. Her legal team argued that she suffered from postpartum psychosis and should not be held criminally responsible. The trial generated intense public debate and widespread online discussion.
Patrick testified during the proceedings and later spoke about the emotional toll of being at the center of public scrutiny. He said false claims and online theories about his role in the tragedy have been painful for him and those close to him.
During his testimony, Patrick experienced a severe panic attack and was taken away in an ambulance. Despite that experience, he returned to court and completed his testimony.
The trial ended earlier this month without a verdict after jurors could not reach a unanimous decision.
Today, Patrick says support from experts and other survivors has helped him move forward. He remarried in April and is building a new life with his wife, Rachel Danis.
The couple are preparing to welcome a child of their own. Patrick said he looks forward to sharing stories about Cora, Dawson and Callan with future family members. He said his children remain a central part of his life and memory, and he hopes their legacy will continue for years to come.
