Domestic Call Escalates Into Deadly Gunfire
A routine domestic violence response in Rancho Cucamonga turned deadly Monday when San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Nunez was shot moments after arriving at a home on Hollyhock Drive. Investigators said the 28-year-old deputy was struck in the head by gunfire from an armed suspect who immediately fled the scene on a motorcycle. Nunez was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Pursuit Reaches Dangerous Speeds on 210 Freeway
Following the shooting, a pursuit unfolded across the Inland Empire as officers chased the fleeing suspect, who was recorded traveling at speeds of up to 150 miles per hour. Television helicopters captured the dramatic chase as the motorcyclist raced along the 210 Freeway, narrowly avoiding collisions while clutching a firearm. The pursuit came to a halt in Upland after the rider slammed into another vehicle, losing control and crashing onto the roadway.
Off-Duty Deputy Ends Chase in Televised Intervention
An off-duty narcotics deputy nearby witnessed the chaos and used his vehicle to strike the suspect, preventing him from fleeing further. The impact, caught live by news cameras, sent the motorcyclist airborne before officers quickly moved in to detain him. Authorities later described the off-duty officer’s action as a justified measure to stop an armed and dangerous individual. The suspect was hospitalized with serious injuries and is expected to face murder charges. Deputy Nunez is survived by his wife, who is expecting their second child, and a young daughter.
