A small northern British Columbia community was rocked by tragedy on Tuesday when a shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School left at least nine people dead. The suspected shooter was also found dead, and several others were injured, making this one of Canada’s deadliest school attacks in decades.
Deadly Violence at School and Nearby Home
Six people were found dead inside the secondary school, and another victim died while being transported to hospital, authorities said. The suspected gunman was discovered at the scene with what appeared to be a self-inflicted injury.
Police later confirmed two more deaths at a nearby residence believed to be connected to the incident. Around 25 additional people were treated at a local medical centre for injuries that were not life-threatening. RCMP Superintendent Ken Floyd said the shooter’s identity is known, but the motive remains unclear.
“We are not in a place to understand why or what may have motivated this tragedy,” Floyd said. Investigators are continuing to determine how the victims were connected to the suspect.
Schools on Lockdown, Emergency Response Deployed
Both Tumbler Ridge Secondary and the nearby elementary school were placed on lockdown after the shooting. Authorities deployed a significant number of RCMP officers and ambulance crews to the small town, though details were limited to protect the safety of the ongoing investigation.
Tumbler Ridge, located more than 1,000 kilometres north of Vancouver near the Alberta border, is home to roughly 175 students in grades 7 through 12. School shootings are extremely rare in Canada, making this incident particularly shocking.
National Leaders Offer Support and Condolences
Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his sorrow for the victims and their families, promising government support for the affected community. “I am devastated by today’s horrific shootings in Tumbler Ridge, BC. My prayers and deepest condolences are with the families and friends who have lost loved ones to these horrific acts of violence,” he wrote on social media.
Carney emphasized the importance of unity and compassion during such crises, praising the country’s ability to come together in the face of tragedy.
