San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan will have a limited role at the beginning of training camp after suffering multiple injuries in a car accident earlier this month. Team officials said Shanahan is recovering well but will follow the NFL’s concussion protocol before returning to his full coaching duties.

Authorities investigated the collision and found no evidence that either driver was impaired. Police also confirmed that both drivers cooperated with investigators and that no citations were issued following the accident.
General manager John Lynch said Shanahan suffered a concussion, a broken nose, broken ribs, and an injury to one of his hands. Despite the injuries, Lynch said the head coach continues to make steady progress during his recovery.
According to Lynch, Shanahan is following the same concussion protocol used for NFL players. Doctors will determine when he has recovered enough to resume all coaching responsibilities.
Lynch said Shanahan may be present on the practice field when training sessions begin but will not lead practices or conduct team meetings until medical staff determine that he is ready to return fully.
The general manager emphasized that Shanahan’s health remains the team’s top priority. He said the organization is committed to giving the coach as much time as needed for a complete recovery before increasing his workload.
Assistant head coach and offensive line coach Chris Foerster will oversee the team’s first practices. He will work alongside offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak, defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, and special teams coordinator Brant Boyer to manage daily training camp activities.
Foerster brings significant experience to the temporary leadership role. He has been part of the 49ers coaching staff since 2019 and previously worked with Shanahan in Washington when Shanahan served as offensive coordinator.
Although Lynch did not provide an exact timetable for Shanahan’s full return, he expressed confidence that the coach would be back well before the regular-season opener on September 11 against the Los Angeles Rams in Australia.
The update also prompted support from around the NFL. Rams head coach Sean McVay, who worked with Shanahan on Washington’s coaching staff from 2010 through 2013, said he has spoken with his longtime colleague since the accident.
McVay said he was thankful that everyone involved in the crash was safe. He added that his thoughts remain with Shanahan and his family as the coach continues his recovery.
The Rams coach also praised Shanahan’s character and resilience. He expressed confidence that Shanahan would recover well and return to coaching with the same energy and commitment that have defined his career.
Shanahan is entering his tenth season as head coach of the 49ers. Since taking over the team, he has established one of the NFL’s most respected offensive systems and has guided San Francisco to consistent success.
Under his leadership, the 49ers have reached the Super Bowl twice, following the 2019 and 2023 seasons. The team also advanced to the NFC Championship Game during the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
Shanahan has compiled a combined regular-season and playoff record of 91 wins and 72 losses with San Francisco. His total ranks third in franchise history behind George Seifert and Bill Walsh.
Last season, the 49ers overcame several key injuries to finish with a 12-5 regular-season record and earn a playoff victory. Shanahan’s performance also earned him a fifth-place finish in voting for the Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year award.
