Idrissa Gueye was applauded by his Everton teammates after apologising for being sent off for striking Michael Keane during Monday’s 1-0 win at Manchester United.
The midfielder was shown a red card after slapping Keane following a heated exchange sparked by Gueye’s misplaced pass that almost led to a Bruno Fernandes chance. It marked the first time in 17 years a Premier League player had been dismissed for striking a teammate.
After the match, Gueye addressed the squad and personally apologised to Keane, also saying sorry to the team for leaving them to play with 10 men for most of the game. His words were warmly received, with the squad giving him a round of applause.
Despite the apology, Gueye may still face club дисципline under David Moyes’ standard procedures, which normally include fines for red cards.
Gueye will serve a three-match suspension against Newcastle, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest, and could also be unavailable if called up by Senegal for the Africa Cup of Nations.
He later shared a public apology on social media, saying he took full responsibility and promising the incident would not be repeated.
