Sir David Attenborough’s new BBC series Kingdom showcases extraordinary wildlife moments — including a lion saving a pregnant hyena from a pack of wild dogs.

Filmed over five years in Zambia’s Luangwa Valley, the documentary follows lions, hyenas, leopards and wild dogs, revealing their fierce rivalries and surprising alliances. “Only nature could write this script,” said executive producer Mike Gunton.

The series features dramatic rescues, rare hunts, and tender moments such as newborn lion cubs opening their eyes. It also highlights human impacts like habitat loss and snare traps.

Scientific consultant Dr Matthew Becker of the Zambia Carnivore Programme said the footage provides crucial data on animal behaviour and survival. Despite the threats, Attenborough’s narration delivers a hopeful message. “It’s a challenge,” said producer Simon Blakeney, “but it’s not hopeless.”
