A Louisiana alligator chase involving a fleeing suspect ended in arrest after a dramatic pursuit that included a car crash, a swamp escape, and an unexpected animal attack, authorities said.
The incident involved 40-year-old Victor Rivas, who was wanted on suspicion of reckless driving and other traffic-related offences. He was later arrested and taken into custody after a multi-stage police pursuit across parts of southeastern Louisiana.
According to the Louisiana State Police, the situation began on Sunday when officers received reports of a vehicle being driven dangerously on Interstate 10 in Jefferson Parish, near New Orleans.
The vehicle, a Toyota Supra, reportedly struck a concrete barrier during the chase and suffered a tyre blowout. Despite the damage, the driver continued moving into nearby St. Charles Parish, where officers eventually located the car and attempted a traffic stop.
Police said Rivas appeared to show signs of impairment during the stop. While officers were preparing to investigate him for suspected driving under the influence, he fled the scene on foot.
The situation quickly escalated as he jumped from an elevated section of Interstate 310 into swampy terrain below. Officers pursued the suspect, but the area’s difficult landscape made the chase more complicated.
Rivas was later seen walking along Highway 61. However, he fled again into a nearby swamp area, where the situation took an unusual turn.
Authorities said the suspect was attacked by an alligator while trying to escape through the swamp. Despite injuries to his arms, he continued to run from officers.
Even after the attack, he reportedly kept moving through the swamp and surrounding roads before officers finally located him again. Law enforcement used drone technology to track his movements, which helped bring the pursuit to an end.
He was eventually arrested and taken to the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center in Killona. Jail records show his bond was set at $17,500.
Rivas faces multiple charges, including driving while intoxicated, resisting arrest, careless driving, and being a fugitive from Jefferson Parish. Additional warrants from earlier traffic incidents were also active at the time of his arrest.
Officials confirmed that he was treated at a hospital for injuries to his arms before being booked into jail. His current legal representation status remains unclear.
Authorities said he had earlier been involved in hit-and-run and reckless driving allegations linked to the same region.
The Louisiana State Police noted that the incident highlights the unpredictable risks associated with impaired driving and attempts to evade law enforcement.
They emphasized that such behaviour can quickly escalate into dangerous situations involving both environmental hazards and serious injury.
The case has drawn attention due to the unusual involvement of wildlife during a police chase, as well as the suspect’s repeated attempts to escape despite being injured.
Investigators continue to review the full sequence of events, including the role of impairment and the circumstances that led the suspect into swamp territory.
Officials said the use of drone surveillance was critical in safely locating and arresting the suspect after he repeatedly fled into difficult terrain.
The incident remains under review as authorities finalize reports and prepare further legal proceedings.
