The University of Notre Dame remains the top university in Indiana, according to the latest U.S. News and World Report Best Colleges rankings for 2026-27. The new rankings were released on Tuesday and show that Notre Dame continues to lead the state in both academic standing and overall value.

The latest rankings arrive at a time when many families are asking an important question. They want to know if a college degree is worth the cost. In response to those concerns, U.S. News made major changes to how schools are evaluated this year.

The updated system places more focus on affordability and long-term outcomes. One of the biggest additions is a new ranking factor called Earnings by Major. This measure looks at how much graduates earn four years after finishing college. The data comes from the U.S. Department of Education.

U.S. News said the goal is to give students and families a clearer picture of what they may receive in return for their investment in higher education.

LaMont Jones, managing editor for education at U.S. News, said families are paying closer attention to the real cost of college and the value of a degree. He said the rankings aim to provide useful information that can help people make informed decisions.

Notre Dame once again stood above all other Indiana schools. The university tied for 20th place among national universities. That position was unchanged from the previous year.

The school performed even better in the value rankings. Notre Dame placed 17th among national universities for value. This result reflects strong academic performance along with positive outcomes for graduates.

Notre Dame has long been Indiana’s highest-ranked university. It is also the only school in the state that regularly appears among the top national institutions.

Purdue University experienced a different result. The school fell nine places in the national university rankings and now stands at No. 55. Even so, Purdue showed major improvement in value rankings.

The university climbed 25 places to reach No. 57 among national universities for value. The results suggest that Purdue continues to offer a strong return for many students despite increased competition in the overall rankings.

A new feature in this year’s rankings looked specifically at value for in-state students. Purdue performed especially well in that category. The university ranked 14th in the nation.

One reason for Purdue’s strong value score may be its long-running tuition freeze. The school has kept tuition unchanged for 14 years, helping many students manage education costs.

Indiana University Bloomington maintained its position in the national rankings. The university remained at No. 73 among national universities.

Indiana University also received recognition for affordability and value. It ranked 23rd among the best value schools for in-state students.

At the national level, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology earned the top overall ranking. Princeton University followed in second place, while Harvard University ranked third.

This year’s rankings showed more movement than usual. U.S. News said the changes were partly due to updates in its ranking method. Another factor was a revised Carnegie Classification framework, which helps place schools into categories such as national or regional universities.

Because of these adjustments, about one-fifth of previously ranked institutions moved into different ranking groups.

Butler University offers a clear example of that shift. The private university in Indianapolis was previously ranked among regional schools in the Midwest. This year it moved into the national universities category.

After the change, Butler was tied for 169th place among national universities.

The rankings also cover many other areas of higher education. U.S. News publishes lists for public universities, innovative schools, and individual academic programs. The rankings include specialized categories for undergraduate fields across the country.

One Indiana institution continues to dominate one of those lists. Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology again earned the top spot for undergraduate engineering programs at schools that do not offer doctoral degrees. The institute has now held that position for 28 consecutive years.

As the focus on college costs grows, the new rankings place greater attention on value, earnings, and student outcomes. For Indiana schools, Notre Dame remains the state leader, while Purdue, Indiana University, Butler, and Rose-Hulman each earned recognition in key areas.
