Lisbon Streetcar Derails, Causing Multiple Fatalities

An electric streetcar derailed in Lisbon on Wednesday, killing at least 15 people and injuring 18 others. Portuguese television showed the yellow-and-white tram lying on its side along a narrow, steep city road. Rescuers found its roof and sides partially crushed as several dozen emergency workers rushed to the scene. The accident occurred around 6 pm, during the evening rush hour, local media reported. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash.

President Expresses Sympathy

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa extended condolences to the victims and their families, acknowledging the city’s shock and grief.

The Glória funicular carries more than 40 passengers, both seated and standing. Lisbon residents regularly rely on the tram to navigate the steep city hills.
