Manchester City Cruise Past Manchester United to Go Four Points Clear in the WSL

Manchester City delivered a dominant derby performance at the Etihad, sweeping Manchester United aside 3-0 to strengthen their position at the top of the Women’s Super League. Goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw, and Lauren Hemp sealed a statement victory for Andrée Jeglertz’s team, who now sit four points clear.

For United, the defeat capped off a draining week and marked back-to-back league losses for the first time since May 2024. Their midweek heroics against PSG appeared to take a toll, with Marc Skinner’s thin squad visibly fatigued.

City, in contrast, looked fresh and ruthless. Hemp, making her first start since returning from injury, terrorised United’s right side, repeatedly creating dangerous chances. After sustained pressure, City broke through when Shaw headed a corner across goal for Knaak to nod in. Shaw soon added the second from a low Kerstin Casparij cross, and Hemp struck a fierce long-range effort minutes later to make it 3-0 before halftime.

United offered little threat going forward and failed to register a shot on target, even after the introduction of Melvine Malard. Jess Park struck the post, but City remained in complete control and could have added a fourth through Shaw late on.

With convincing wins over both Arsenal and United already this season, City have firmly announced their title credentials. Skinner, meanwhile, admitted United need reinforcements in January if they are to stay in the race.
