Milo Yiannopoulos, a British political commentator and internet personality, was deported to the United Kingdom on Saturday, one day after his arrest by U.S. immigration officials. The move followed a final removal order issued by an immigration judge earlier this year.
Officials said Yiannopoulos was taken into custody at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport on Friday. Authorities stated that he failed to appear for a scheduled immigration hearing in July. According to the Department of Homeland Security, an immigration judge issued a final removal order on July 22.
The deportation came as immigration officials continue to increase enforcement efforts across the United States. Airports have become one of the locations where immigration-related arrests are taking place more often. The case quickly gained public attention because of Yiannopoulos’ long history as a political activist and media figure.
Yiannopoulos first became widely known through his work in conservative media. He gained a large online following during the early years of President Donald Trump’s political rise. At that time, he strongly supported Trump and often appeared alongside figures connected to the broader conservative movement.
