England detects newly evolved mpox variant after traveller returns from Asia

Health officials in England have identified a new mpox variant in a person who recently travelled to Asia. Genome sequencing showed the virus is a recombinant form, combining elements of the more severe clade 1 and the milder clade 2, which caused the 2022 global outbreak. Authorities say they are assessing the significance of the strain.

The UK Health Security Agency explained that viral evolution is normal and that continued genomic monitoring is essential. While most mpox cases remain mild, officials are urging eligible individuals to get vaccinated as a precaution.

Mpox spreads through close contact with lesions, contaminated materials, or respiratory droplets. Symptoms can take up to three weeks to appear and include fever, headache, fatigue and a rash. The newly identified strain highlights the potential for ongoing virus evolution as both clades continue to circulate.

The World Health Organization recorded nearly 48,000 cases and 201 deaths globally this year. Experts stress the importance of monitoring transmission and severity if further cases of the variant appear.
