Major Investment Fuels Belgium’s AI and Cloud Growth

Google invests €5 billion in Belgium to expand its data and AI infrastructure. The project represents Google’s largest undertaking in the country, creating 300 jobs and boosting Wallonia’s technological capacity. This marks one of the most significant single tech investments in Belgium’s history and highlights Google’s expanding role in Europe’s digital transformation.

The company enhances its Saint-Ghislain site in Wallonia to advance access to AI and cloud technologies across Europe. “With this announcement, Google strengthens its foundation in Belgium, builds new infrastructure, and drives AI-powered progress,” said Bikash Koley, Google’s Vice President for Global Infrastructure.

Prime Minister Bart De Wever called the move a milestone for Belgium’s economy and green transition. “Google’s investment shows trust in Belgium as a center of digital innovation and sustainable growth. By expanding advanced infrastructure, creating skilled employment, and securing carbon-free energy, Belgium cements its role as a European leader in digital development,” he said.

All new facilities will operate on carbon-free energy and connect to Belgium’s renewable grid, supporting both national and EU 2030 climate targets.

Wallonia Strengthens Its Role in European Innovation

Wallonia celebrates Google’s renewed confidence in the region. Since opening its Belgian data campus there in 2009, Google has positioned Wallonia as a key European hub for digital progress.

“The €5 billion investment reaffirms Wallonia’s leading role in Europe’s data processing and storage landscape,” said Pierre-Yves Jeholet, Vice President of the Government of Wallonia. “It generates digital employment, drives innovation, upgrades infrastructure, and enhances AI skills. It also reinforces our region’s digital sovereignty, fitting perfectly within our upcoming digital strategy.”

Local representatives expressed strong support. “This project strengthens our innovation ecosystem and creates opportunities for businesses. We’ll continue collaborating with inter-city agency IDEA to ensure the smooth integration of the development,” said Florence Monier, Mayor of Saint-Ghislain.

Balancing Global Partnerships with National Security

Defence and Foreign Trade Minister Theo Francken emphasized the importance of cooperation alongside protection of national interests. “Belgium values partnerships with global tech leaders like Google,” he said. “We enhance our cyber and data resilience through open collaboration, while maintaining strong safeguards for sovereignty and security.”

The project deepens Google’s collaboration with Belgian telecom company Proximus, which develops sovereign cloud services alongside the tech firm. “We welcome Google’s continued investment in Belgium,” said Fabrice De Windt, CEO of Proximus. “It strengthens Belgium’s position as a European digital innovation hub and reinforces our partnership.”

Through this initiative, Google solidifies Belgium’s position at the intersection of technology, sustainability, and security — turning Wallonia into a driving force behind Europe’s carbon-free digital era.
