Tesla Registrations Drop Sharply in Europe as BYD Expands Market Share

Tesla Experiences Significant Decline

Tesla saw its European sales slump in July, with registrations down 40% compared to the same period last year. According to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), 8,837 Tesla vehicles were registered across the EU, the UK, and the European Free Trade Association, a decrease from 14,769 in July 2024. Even with updates to the Model Y, Tesla is struggling to maintain its presence in a highly competitive market.

BYD Records Rapid Growth

BYD’s European registrations jumped to 13,503 last month, more than three times the 4,151 recorded in July 2024. The company’s market share increased to 1.2%, overtaking Tesla’s 0.8%. Known for its lower-priced models, BYD has been expanding aggressively across Europe and earlier this year surpassed Tesla in regional sales for the first time, according to JATO Dynamics.

UK Incentives and Industry Outlook

The UK government has introduced new incentives to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles. Ford will be the first automaker to receive the full £3,750 grant on two models, while 26 additional vehicles are eligible for £1,500. The subsidies apply to cars priced below £37,000 and are automatically applied at the point of sale. UK car production rose 5.6% in July, marking a second consecutive month of growth. However, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders warned that the market faces continued uncertainty due to weak consumer confidence and fluctuating trade conditions. Across Europe, 1.011 million battery-electric vehicles were registered in the first seven months of 2025, accounting for 15.6% of new car sales, while hybrid vehicles led with 2.255 million registrations, supported by growth in France, Spain, Germany, and Italy.
