A severe storm in Virginia led to a deadly accident on Friday evening when a large tent collapsed during a church event, killing one person and injuring at least 11 others, authorities said.
The incident happened around 6:45 p.m. at EastLake Community Church in Moneta, Bedford County, as families gathered for an outdoor program under a large commercial tent. Officials said the structure, which could seat about 1,500 people, collapsed suddenly as strong winds moved through the area.
Bedford County acting fire and rescue Chief Abbey Johnston said the church pastor had just begun evacuating people when the collapse occurred. She described the situation as extremely fast and chaotic, leaving little time for many attendees to react or move to safety.
Authorities confirmed that one person died and 11 others were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Another 11 people were treated at the scene and released. Officials have not yet released details about the condition of those hospitalized.
The collapse happened during a severe thunderstorm watch across most of Virginia, including the Moneta region, which remained in effect until 9 p.m. Friday. Officials believe strong wind gusts were the main cause of the incident.
Chief Johnston said the tent was properly secured at the time, but the sudden burst of wind was powerful enough to bring it down. Emergency responders from multiple departments quickly arrived at the scene to assist with rescue efforts and help account for attendees.
The event was part of a church gathering described as a “multiply week” celebration. It was planned as a family-friendly program featuring food, worship services, children’s water activities, and ice cream. The gathering was being held outdoors under the large tent when the storm hit.
Moneta, the small community where the incident occurred, has a population of around 450 people and is located about 18 miles east of Roanoke. The close-knit nature of the town has added to the emotional impact of the tragedy.
Pastor Troy Keaton shared a message on social media describing the event as a “great tragedy.” He said he had just stepped onto the stage to dismiss attendees when the wind suddenly lifted the tent.
