A father is expressing deep gratitude after a teenage lifeguard rescued his 10-year-old son from powerful ocean waves along the California coast.
The dramatic rescue took place on July 25 at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz, located about 60 miles south of San Francisco. The incident was captured on video and has drawn widespread attention for the quick actions of a young lifeguard who rushed into dangerous surf conditions.
Sumit Rai said he remains thankful for the courage shown by 16-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams, who entered rough water to save his son Nathaniel.
Rai said the conditions at the beach were extremely dangerous. Large waves, strong currents, and rip tides created a serious risk for anyone entering the water.
According to Rai, his son was standing in shallow water when a powerful swell suddenly knocked him off balance and pulled him into the ocean.
At the time of the incident, Rai was in Dallas. He learned about the rescue later that day while speaking with his children by phone.
He said Nathaniel told him he lost consciousness during the frightening experience. The father recalled that his son sounded quiet and shaken while describing what had happened.
The next day, Rai watched footage of the rescue and gained a better understanding of the dangers his son had faced.
Williams said he noticed Nathaniel lose his footing in ankle-deep water as strong waves moved toward the shore.
The teenage lifeguard immediately called for assistance over his radio and ran toward the child.
He later explained that the rescue was difficult because the powerful waves continued pushing both him and the boy. During the first attempt, he struggled to pull Nathaniel out because the child was unresponsive and the surf was extremely strong.
California State Parks reported that Nathaniel was swept about 15 yards into the ocean before Williams reached him.
Video of the rescue shows the lifeguard diving through breaking waves while holding tightly to the child.
As conditions remained challenging, another lifeguard entered the water to help. Several nearby beachgoers also moved toward the scene, but Williams advised them to stay back and remain safe on shore.
Working together, the rescue team successfully brought Nathaniel back to the beach.
Williams said he was grateful for the opportunity to return the child safely to his family. He also praised fellow lifeguards who carry out similar rescues every day along California beaches.
Officials said Nathaniel did not suffer serious physical injuries. After receiving a medical evaluation, he was released to his family.
Rai said his son later told him that he had inhaled sand and spent time coughing after reaching shore.
Although Nathaniel escaped major physical harm, the emotional impact of the experience remains significant.
His father said the young boy continues to think about the incident and is still processing what happened.
According to Rai, the rescue remains on Nathaniel’s mind, especially at night. The family believes the experience was traumatic and expects it may take time for him to fully recover emotionally.
Despite those challenges, Rai remains focused on the positive outcome and the actions that made it possible.
He said the bravery shown by Williams likely saved his son’s life.
The father has already reached out to the teenage lifeguard and hopes to thank him in person in the near future.
Rai said he feels a lasting sense of gratitude toward the young rescuer and the team that helped bring Nathaniel safely back to shore.
