Maine ICE Shooting is under investigation after a federal agent fatally shot a driver during an enforcement operation.
A federal investigation is underway after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer fatally shot a driver during an enforcement operation in Biddeford, Maine. The incident has drawn national attention as officials work to determine exactly what happened and whether the use of deadly force was justified.
According to the US Department of Homeland Security, ICE officers were conducting surveillance at an address connected to a person with a final order of removal. Officials said agents attempted to stop a vehicle that was leaving the location.
The department stated that the driver tried to flee the scene. It said an ICE officer discharged a firearm after believing there was a threat to public safety. Authorities have not released the name of the officer involved.
The person who died was later identified by immigrant advocacy organizations as a 26-year-old man from Colombia. The Colombian Embassy confirmed it is in contact with US authorities and is providing consular assistance to the man’s family.
Federal and state officials have offered additional details as investigations continue. Senator Angus King said he spoke with Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who told him the officer believed the driver was attempting to use the vehicle as a weapon against ICE agents.
King said investigators now need to determine whether the circumstances justified the use of deadly force. He also noted that the officers involved were not wearing body cameras during the operation.
The Department of Homeland Security has not provided further clarification regarding the events leading to the shooting. Officials have confirmed that several investigations are now underway.
The Maine Attorney General’s Office is reviewing the incident. Officials said early information indicates the driver was attempting to flee in the direction of the ICE officer. The agency also confirmed that the officer who fired the fatal shot has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues.
The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General is conducting a separate investigation in cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
A nearby resident who witnessed part of the incident described hearing several loud sounds before looking outside. He said he saw a damaged vehicle and later observed emergency responders arriving at the scene. The witness also recalled hearing the wounded driver speak before medical personnel reached him.
Security camera footage from a nearby business has also become part of the investigation. The video reportedly shows a vehicle moving through an intersection before being blocked by a law enforcement sport utility vehicle. Officers are then seen removing the driver from the vehicle. The footage does not clearly show the moment when shots were fired.
Immigrant advocacy organizations said the man had authorization to work in the United States. Representatives said they have been supporting the family following the incident but noted that relatives are not yet prepared to speak publicly.
Residents who knew the man described him as a devoted father who lived nearby with his wife and young daughter. Community members gathered at the scene after the shooting to offer support to the family and express concern about the incident.
Several hundred demonstrators later gathered in Biddeford to protest ICE enforcement actions. Participants carried signs calling for immigration policy changes and greater accountability. A smaller group also gathered nearby to express support for ICE officers and federal immigration enforcement.
The shooting comes during a period of increased immigration enforcement across the United States. Federal authorities have expanded operations aimed at carrying out immigration laws, resulting in higher numbers of arrests in several states.
Official data shows that ICE arrested hundreds of people in Maine during the early months of President Donald Trump’s second term. Federal officials have said many arrests involved individuals with criminal histories, while public records indicate others were still involved in immigration proceedings or had not been convicted of crimes.
The investigations into the Biddeford shooting remain active. Authorities have not announced when final findings will be released. Officials say additional information will become available as investigators continue reviewing witness statements, video evidence, and other facts surrounding the incident.
