Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham says recent demonstrations linked to her views on transgender participation in women’s sports are not distracting her or her teammates as the WNBA team continues its strong run of form.
Cunningham addressed the issue before Friday night’s game against the Portland Fire, where supporters gathered outside the arena for a second consecutive game to show support for her position on transgender athletes competing in girls’ and women’s sports.
Despite growing public attention surrounding the rallies, Cunningham said her focus remains firmly on basketball.
According to the Fever guard, the demonstrations have not affected her preparation, performance or the team’s mindset.
She said those who know her personally understand her character and commitment to the sport, adding that she remains focused on inspiring young athletes and representing herself authentically.
Cunningham emphasized that she has no intention of changing who she is because others may disagree with her views.
The rallies in Portland followed a similar gathering held earlier in the week before Indiana’s game against the Seattle Storm.
Both events attracted relatively small groups of supporters, along with spectators and media attention.
Cunningham said she had no involvement in organizing either demonstration.
She described the events as examples of people exercising their right to express their opinions and noted that sports fans have long used public gatherings to support causes and athletes they believe in.
Supporters at the rallies praised Cunningham for publicly sharing her views on the issue.
Some participants said they wanted to show support for women and girls in sports and encourage broader discussion about athletic competition policies.
Another demonstration is reportedly planned for Sunday when the Fever face the Minnesota Lynx in Minneapolis.

During that game, two Cunningham supporters sat courtside holding signs connected to a Washington state ballot initiative concerning transgender participation in school sports.
Following an interaction involving the supporters, the WNBA issued disciplinary action against a co-owner of the Seattle Storm.
The league fined the executive and suspended her for five games.
The Storm later released a statement apologizing for the incident and reaffirming its commitment to providing a welcoming and respectful environment for all fans attending games.
The Seattle rally also highlighted a proposed statewide ballot measure that would restrict transgender students from participating in girls’ athletic programs in Washington schools.
Supporters of the initiative argued that the measure is intended to protect opportunities for female athletes.
The issue remains part of a broader national discussion taking place across sports organizations, schools and government bodies.
Inside the arena in Portland, Cunningham received a mixed reception from spectators.
Some fans booed when she entered the game during the first quarter, while others displayed small transgender pride flags in the crowd.
Despite the attention surrounding the controversy, the Fever delivered another strong performance on the court.
Indiana defeated the Portland Fire 112-98 to secure its fifth consecutive victory.
Cunningham contributed 13 points in the win, helping the Fever maintain their momentum as the regular season continues.
Star guard Caitlin Clark led the team with an impressive all-around performance.
Clark recorded the fourth triple-double of her professional career, finishing with 26 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.
