The United States and Iran exchanged military strikes after attacks on commercial oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, marking a sharp escalation in tensions across the Middle East. The latest developments have raised concerns over regional security, global energy supplies, and the future of recent diplomatic efforts.

The US military said it launched a large-scale operation targeting more than 80 sites linked to Iran. According to US Central Command, the strikes included attacks on missile launch positions, command centers, air defense systems, radar facilities, and more than 60 small boats operated by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in and around the Strait of Hormuz. The US said the operation was intended to protect commercial shipping and respond to recent attacks on merchant vessels traveling through the strategic waterway.

The action followed attacks on three commercial oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. US officials described the incidents as unacceptable and said military action was necessary to prevent further threats to international shipping. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime routes, carrying a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas exports.

Iran condemned the US strikes and accused Washington of violating a memorandum of understanding reached last month to reduce tensions. Iranian officials said the attacks breached previous commitments and warned that Tehran would respond to defend its national interests and security.

Iranian state media reported that strikes hit areas including Qeshm Island, Bandar Abbas, and Sirik. Officials said several people were injured by shrapnel, although they did not immediately provide detailed casualty figures.

Hours after the US operation, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced retaliatory strikes against US military facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait. The group claimed it launched missiles and drones at dozens of military sites, including a US Navy headquarters in Bahrain and an air base in Kuwait. Officials in the region reported heightened security as air defense systems were activated.

The military escalation came alongside new economic measures. The United States revoked a temporary waiver that had allowed limited Iranian oil exports, increasing pressure on Tehran. Iranian officials criticized the move, saying it showed a lack of commitment to previous agreements and further damaged diplomatic relations.

The recent violence has also drawn reactions from neighboring Gulf countries. Qatar and Saudi Arabia both reported that tankers linked to their countries were affected during the incidents near the Strait of Hormuz. The developments have increased concerns about the safety of commercial shipping through one of the world’s busiest energy corridors.

Maritime security organizations have also reported multiple incidents involving commercial vessels in the area. Some ships sustained damage after being struck, while others reported onboard fires or continued to nearby ports after suffering limited structural damage. Shipping companies are closely monitoring the situation as security risks remain high.

The latest exchange of military action threatens to undermine efforts to restore stability between Washington and Tehran. Diplomatic talks aimed at easing tensions have slowed as both sides accuse each other of violating previous agreements. Analysts warn that continued confrontation could disrupt global energy markets and increase uncertainty across the Middle East.

Despite the escalation, officials from both countries have indicated that diplomatic channels remain open. However, with military operations continuing and political tensions rising, the situation remains highly uncertain. International observers are closely watching developments as governments seek to prevent a wider regional conflict while protecting the free movement of commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
